Composing

Primarily composing with computer sequencing programs, Steven has developed a very personal and deep style exploring many different techniques. Some more recent major symphonic works have had a foundation originally written on guitar, a method which is becoming more frequent in his composition, perhaps because it's an instrument with which he is self-taught and is naturally expressive on.

The combination of moving away from an electronic medium such as a computer has proved beneficial in exploring new avenues and finding feeling, but a computer is very helpful in piecing all parts together and hearing the final result. It could be said that Steven has a natural ability to write with expression however, even when solely writing with computer which is still his most common method. Notably, regarding the guitar, although this instrument sometimes plays a part in the origins of a large-scale symphonic work, the colour of the instrument is not necessarily heard within a performance of a completed score. Steven's style is very individual.

Owning more than one synthesizer further enables him to explore different sounds and ideas. Roland ® is probably his preference but he likes Yamaha ® a lot too. He has a good knowledge of MIDI which allows him to polish computer performances of finished works so even when performed by synthesiser alone they still retain expression.

Commissioning

Steven accepts commissions to write music for any occasion or soundtrack, whether it be a beautiful and nocturnal piano piece with an air of tragedy or a powerful brass work to symbolize triumph, he is upto the challenge and will not disappoint. Perhaps a wedding score as a gift? Or a mass for peace? If he is writing for a motion picture, then he prefers to see all the necessary footage to aquire a good feel and will also need to know the timing information as well as what the director is seeking.

Although classical is his favourite genre, commissioned works do not have to be solely in the classical style. Many styles can be accommodated and discussion is best if the client has a specific idea of what their seeking, otherwise all decisions can be left entirely to Steven to provide exactly the right score for exactly the right occasion.
